My name is Jamie Shum, and I’m an event, recruitment, and marketing strategist, community and relationship builder, speaker, and educator based in the New York Metro area. I was named after Jamie Buchman, portrayed by actress and director Helen Hunt from the hit NBC 90s sitcom Mad About You.
I'm passionate about creating successful experiences that provide opportunities for meaningful interaction, engagement, and learning to diverse audiences ranging in size from 10 to 1,000+ attendees.
At the end of July 2019, I completed a 13 month-long contract role as the Digital Marketing and Events Coordinator at FindSpark, a career education and professional development startup that works with employers to support their diversity and inclusion, early career recruitment, and employer branding initiatives. Since forming in 2011, FindSpark has produced 250+ experiential career events and programs for 500+ employers across industries that connect them to FindSpark's online and offline community of 30,000+ diverse members. I enjoyed wearing a variety of hats, including event planning, community engagement, program and logistics coordination, operations, customer service, marketing, and social media.
Before FindSpark, I was the Social Media and Content Strategist for Cennarium, a performing arts subscription-based video streaming platform start-up founded in Brazil. Prior to that, I participated in Ruder Finn's highly-competitive Executive Training Program, completed internships in the higher education, non-profit, entertainment, and art sectors, and held various leadership positions on student organizations at my alma mater Ithaca College.
Since April 2018, I serve as the Director of Engagement on the Board of Directors for ICUnity, Ithaca College’s affinity organization that connects underrepresented students, alumni, campus community partners, and allies, online and offline. Since its founding in 2002, ICUnity hosts diversity and inclusion-related events, designed to promote inclusive social interaction and facilitate intercultural communication.
Additionally, I’m the Marketing Chair on the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Tri-State District’s Board of Directors, which serves and supports PRSA members in the New York, New Jersey, Greater Connecticut, and Westchester/Fairfield chapters. PRSA Tri-State District hosts a variety of professional development intiatives and events, including the annual PRSA Tri-State Conference that takes place in NYC during the fall.
I can be found as an invited speaker and panelist at networking and professional development events and college courses. I also serve as host and emcee at large-scale special events, including Ithaca College’s annual Network Nights in NYC, a networking event with 400+ attendees.
I’m a proud alum and Magna cum Laude graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Communication Management and Design, with a minor in Music.
In my free time, you can find me exploring museums, parks, restaurants and dessert shops in NYC, catching up on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Jeopardy!, playing with cats, or listening to music and figuring out harmonies by ear (especially Mariah Carey – check out my recent press quote about my time at the Mariah Carey Experience Pop-Up on Billboard here).
I'm now seeking new, full-time employment opportunities in the NYC Metro and DC areas. I'm also always looking to build my skills and meet professionals to collaborate with on events and programs. Interested in chatting? Check out my portfolio and feel free to reach out – let’s connect!
