Jamie Shum

During my senior year at Ithaca College, I conducted a college credit-bearing independent research study: "The Effects of Personality Types (Introversion-Extraversion) on Promoting Feminism on Social Media Platforms." 

 

My study, performed under the guidance of Assistant Professor Yvette Sterbenk, utilized a survey that was disseminated shortly after the 2017 Women's March, and examines the effects that personality types (using the terms introversion and extraversion) have regarding how people utilize social media to promote content, issues, and ideas about feminism.

 

I was accepted from a competitive application process to present my research findings at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research 2017 (NCUR 2017) at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee, with support from Ithaca College’s Sponsored Research division. During this conference, I was featured on NCUR 2017’s official Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram handles.

 

I also presented my findings at the 20th Annual James J. Whalen Academic Symposium at Ithaca College.

 

My independent research study was later published in the Proceedings of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 2017. The Proceedings are published annually as a service of the University of North Carolina at Asheville and distributed to academic institutions across the United States. The included papers are representative of the research presented at the conference and serve as testimonies to the value of the undergraduate research enterprise.
